Strategic thinker. Writer. Bridge builder.

ABOUT ME

I'm Danny, a balanced, analytical and big picture thinker that convenes great minds to achieve lofty objectives.I value building bridges across cultural, organisational and interpersonal boundaries to facilitate change. In doing so, I immerse myself in making sense of different perspectives, drawing on a diversity of opinion to exercise sound judgement. My multidisciplinary background reflects my intellectual curiosity and big picture mindset, enabling me to reconcile emerging technological advances with geopolitical realities.

my story

Perhaps it can be attributed to my mixed heritage of British, Iraqi and German influences, for I have always maintained a truly big-picture global outlook. One of my earliest memories was spinning and interrogating an illuminated globe. As my fingers traced across oceans and continents, I pondered what lay beneath until I became lost in thought. My time was spent in equal measure gazing at the poster of national flags on the wall beside me. More than mere variations of colours, patterns and symbols, each flag represented untapped enigmas, entire new worlds that left me transfixed in wonder. This spark lay largely dormant within me, supplanted by the generalist subject matter to which schooling is catered in the early years, and only to be reignited by my study of the humanities during my late teens. My absorption in books on global political affairs and history was only matched by the intensity with which I threw myself into the intellectually rigorous school debating team. It was here that I honed my ability to consider differing points of view, construct compelling arguments and gain a holistic understanding of issues gripping the globe.

International Relations at King's College London was a natural degree of choice for me. While I enrolled with the goal of better understanding the historical underpinnings of the contemporary international system, I emerged fascinated with how technology was fundamentally re-shaping this same system in ways that we did not yet even understand. Inspired, I based my dissertation on a comparative analysis of how malicious actors enact disinformation campaigns in the pre and post-internet eras. What I took away from my time at King's College was that successful grand strategy would be inseparable from a robust understanding of how to intelligently harness emerging technology while mitigating against its risks. That technology would fundamentally alter global affairs was a fait accompli; it was how we managed this change that would define the world order.Clear-eyed about how the international political system was being redefined by far-reaching technological change, I chose to pursue a master's degree that would provide me with the intellectual tools to make sense of how to manage this change responsibly from both a private and public sector perspective. At the time, I was fortunate enough to be the only student from a non-STEM background to be accepted onto the MPhil Technology Policy at the University of Cambridge. The programme sharpened my multidisciplinary mindset and equipped me to integrate technology, management, economics and policy. Of particular note was my final group project, where I worked with a small group of peers to investigate and report how improving platform safety could mitigate against online harms via design choice architecture.

Graduating with a commendation from the programme convener and the third highest grade in my cohort was no protection against a job market still reeling from the vestiges of a pandemic. Nonetheless, this did not dim my enthusiasm to complement my academic record with professional experience. My affinity for academic achievement had been overthrown by an obsession with building something special in the private sector. I did not yet know where this impulse would leave me.I joined a scientific and medical publishing firm, Future Science Group. Although lacking a scientific or medical background, my brief was sufficiently calibrated to my skills; to oversee and manage the organisation's innovation. I proceeded to learn, review and analyse every product and service in the publisher's portfolio, with a specific focus on its digital offerings. This allowed me to make actionable recommendations to facilitate growth. After just a year at Future Science Group, I was lucky enough to be promoted to the position of General Manager. This was a herculean task, not only because I lacked experience as a manager of a company, but because I would inherit an organisation rocked by instability, with staff turnover at unprecedented levels. I embarked on a recruitment drive, implemented new processes to streamline operations, and slashed costs to enhance efficiency. Such efforts stabilised the firm and ensured it was in the best position to be acquired, which it was the following year by Informa Plc. I managed and oversaw this transaction throughout, including negotiations, due diligence and cooperation with the acquirer to ensure a smooth and orderly transition.

Future Medicine AI had been my brainchild that I established within Future Science Group. As the General Manager of the entire firm, I could scarcely dedicate as much energy to it as I would have liked. For this reason, I asked the seller to hold this back from the sale. Post-sale, therefore, building this into the largest publishing platform for AI in health became my primary focus. I built a team of talented individuals passionate about this space to help me realise this vision.

When I'm not building Future Medicine AI, I'm writing on global affairs and devouring the latest history book I could get my hands on. My story continues to be written...
